Funky Buddha announces barrel-aged Living Barrel series

FB_Barrel-AgedFunky Buddha, the evil geniuses behind popular brews like Last Snow and Last Buffalo in the Park, has announced a new series of barrel-aged beers. The Living Barrel Series will feature beers aged in bourbon, rum, tequila, Chardonnay and Cabernet barrels among others.

“Like the spiraling growth of a tree’s branches,” says an unnamed source in the Funky Buddha press release. “So too are these beers transformed over time thanks to the maturation exclusively in oak wine and spirits casks. Unlike the ageless timber, these bottles are only available for a limited time.”

Over the years, the brewery has amassed an impressive 500 casks that previously held spirits and wine of many types. Currently, there are hundreds of barrels holding everything from stouts to saisons quietly aging to perfection. Samples of the beers are regularly drawn and tested to assess its progress and maturity.

The Living Barrel series will be released in 22 ounce bottles through Funky Buddha’s tap room with some of the beers will gong to distribution throughout Florida. The first bottles will release the end of July and beginning of August. Included in these releases are a Rum Barrel-Aged Pina Colada beer consisting of an imperial cream ale made with real pineapple and coconut and aged in Jamaican rum casks for months; and Vanilla Bourbon Barrel-aged Nikolai Vorlauf, an Imperial Russian Stout aged for nearly two years in Bourbon barrels with whole vanilla beans added to the barrel. A third release, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dread Pirate Roberts (imperial stout with raspberries, chocolate, and coconut), will be released exclusively to Funky Buddha’s Imperial Club members in August If any bottles remain, a release to the public will be scheduled.

Future releases will include this year’s versions of Morning Wood and Last Buffalo in the Park along with others yet to be announced.

Funky Buddha plans to continue releasing special, barrel-aged brews into 2018 and beyond.

Funky Buddha to release new pineapple blonde ale

pineapple_blondeOAKLAND PARK, FL – Get ready to put your feet in the sand with a beer in your hand: Pineapple Beach, a tropical and refreshing blonde ale kissed with gnarly waves of juicy pineapple, is arriving next month in six-pack, 12-ounce bottles! This newest addition to Funky Buddha’s year-round lineup will be available on February 1st at major retailers throughout Florida for a suggested retail price of $9.99.

Pineapple Beach will be the first new year-round offering from Funky Buddha Brewery since early 2016. This tasty blonde ale is made with pilsner malt and a touch of wheat for a crisp, light body. A dose of citra hops add a floral, heady aroma and dry finish, while just enough real pineapple is added to capture the tropical vibe without making the beer overly sweet or fruity.

“Pineapple Beach fills a demand that we’re seeing for sessionable beers that appeal to a broad range of craft consumers,” says KC Sentz, co-owner and general manager of Funky Buddha Brewery. “It’s easy-drinking but flavorful, which is exactly what our customers have been asking for.”

The launch of this new, year-round beer kicks off a big 2017 for Funky Buddha. The brewery plans to begin a new expansion this year that will see it’s capacity and size grow significantly, allowing its beers to be sold out of the state of Florida for the first time. Other 2017 releases will include an expanded portfolio of it’s “Little Buddha Small Batch” line of beers and an expanded barrel-aging program that will produce over 500 BBLs of highly sought after brands this year.

Funky Buddha brews up fall treat

FBB-005e_3D_4pack_RGBAt a time of year when every brewery in North America is releasing their version of pumpkin ale, Funky Buddha is bucking the trend and releasing a beverage brewed with the other Thanksgiving season staple; sweet potatoes. Four-packs of the brewery’s Sweet Potato Casserole Strong Ale will be dropping into retail outlets the week of September 1.

John Linn, Funky Buddha’s Brand Director, says of the brew, “Funky Buddha’s September through November seasonal is fresh out of the oven and ready to party.”

Linn describes the beer as presenting flavors of marshmallow, fall spices and sweet potato like any respectable mom would put into the iconic casserole. And, at 7.9% ABV, the brew packs a wallop mom’s creation does not.

SPC will go on sale at Funky Buddha Brewery in South Florida at noon on September 1 for $11.99 per 4-pack. It will also see full state distribution through Brown Distributing starting that week. Expect SPC to arrive in all major retailers including Total Wine, Whole Foods Market, ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, The Fresh Market, Trader Joe’s, and select Publix locations.

Funky Buddha to bottle beers

fb_packageBeer lovers in South Florida have known that the beers at Oakland Park’s Funky Buddha were remarkable from the brewery’s inception in 2010. But, in order to taste the beer, they had to go to a the brewery taproom or visit a bar with their beers on tap. In just a few weeks that will change as Funky Buddha launches its first two packaged brews.

Read the press release below for all the details.

OAKLAND PARK, FL – Florida, it’s time to Get Funky! That’s right: Funky Buddha is proud to announce that bottles of its acclaimed beers will be hitting distribution for the first time on Wednesday, December 10. This anticipated launch will see six-pack, 12-ounce bottles arriving on the shelves of major retailers throughout South Florida just in time for the holiday season.

“The launch of package is a huge leap in our growth as a company and a dramatic step forward for the evolution of craft beer in South Florida,” says KC Sentz, General Manager and Co-Owner of Funky Buddha Brewery. “Our customers have been demanding this for a long time, so the fact that they will finally be able to walk into a store and purchase a six-pack of our beer is an extremely proud moment.”

This launch truly has been a long time in the making. In February, Funky Buddha set out on a three-million dollar expansion to its Oakland Park facility that included taking on an additional 21,000 square/feet production space, technical upgrades to the infrastructure of the facility, and a host of new equipment – including a bottling line from industry leaders CFT and a centrifugal separator from Westfalia Group. This state-of-the-art equipment will ensure the highest level of quality and freshness for Funky Buddha’s beers, all while preserving the bold flavors the brewery has become known for. Simply put: this expansion has cemented the framework for Funky Buddha to create and distribute over 600,000 cases of beer throughout Florida by the end of 2016.

“Florida is thirsty for our beer, and we’re excited to say that we’re ready to deliver,” says Head Brewer and Co-Owner Ryan Sentz. “We’re humbled by the response we’ve received to our beers in the past two years, which just makes the future that much more exciting.”

That future begins on December 10, when Funky Buddha will launch six-packs of its best-selling flagships Floridian Hefeweizen and Hop Gun India Pale Ale at major retailers throughout Broward, Dade, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties. Now, a little more on these launch beers:

Floridian Hefeweizen (92 rating on RateBeer.com) is a perennial favorite on draught throughout Florida and the best-selling beer in Funky Buddha’s acclaimed line up. This German-style wheat ale is full on flavor yet light on the palate, with the compelling notes of banana, citrus and clove. Available year-round, Floridian Hefeweizen will be packaged in cases of four six-packs. (image attached)

Hop Gun IPA (95 rating on RateBeer.com) is Funky Buddha’s East Coast-style India Pale Ale, delivering a payload of good ol’ American hops that burst forth with the flavors of grapefruit and pineapple. Smooth caramel and honey malts balance out the complex hop finish – just like any good wingman should. Also available year-round, Hop Gun IPA will be packaged in cases of four six-packs. Funky Buddha isn’t stopping there. In January, the brewery plans to launch Zen Session IPA (formerly known as Crusher IPA), a light-bodied, 4.5% ABV ale brewed with Citra hops for lush citrus aroma and flavor. That month will also see the release of the brewery’s first limited, 12-ounce four-pack, Last Snow Porter. Ranked as the #2 porter in the world by the 2014 Rate Beer Best awards, Last Snow is an ode to Florida “winter” brewed with real coffee, white chocolate, and coconut.

Moving forward in 2015, seasonal four-pack releases will include favorites Nib Smuggler Chocolate Milk Porter, More Moro Blood Orange IPA, Blueberry Cobbler Ale, and Sweet Potato Casserole. Limited 22-ounce “bombers” will also hit distribution in 2015 and include the brewery’s sought-after specialty release and barrel-aged brews, the first of which will be Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, scheduled for release at the brewery on January 10. Package product will be distributed by Brown Distributing of West Palm Beach, with distribution throughout the Orlando, Tampa, and Northern Florida markets by the end of 2015.

Craft beer to sail with Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum-class ships

michaels-experienceOver the past few years the cruise ship industry seem to be paying more attention to the burgeoning craft beer movement. Earlier this year, Carnival began serving several beers from Florida craft beer heavy-weight Cigar City Brewing Company. Then, just a few months ago, Funky Buddha Brewing Company announced a partnership with Celebrity Cruise lines to serve their brews on board. But, if you are really looking for a craft beer experience beyond just a few lonely beers here or there, you should really look in to a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas.

James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Schwartz worked closely with Royal Caribbean to concoct an on-board experience for those with a passion for craft beers, great food and a laid-back gastropub atmosphere. The results of their hard work is Michael’s Genuine Pub where Schwartz showcases his love for fresh simple foods made with seasonally-sourced ingredients paired with lovingly-created American craft beer.

Craft beers available on the ship will include a selection of brews from well-known breweries such as Goose Island, Blue Point, Left Hand, Brooklyn, Founder’s, Stone and Bear Republic among others. In addition, the pub will feature the chef’s own classic American ale, Michael’s Genuine® Home Brew.

Chef Schwartz is the chef/owner of The Genuine Hospitality Group, with restaurants including Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink Miami (Est. 2006), Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink Grand Cayman (Est. 2010), Harry’s Pizzeria (Est. 2011), The Cypress Room (Est. 2013), and Restaurant Michael Schwartz (Est. 2013).

The gastropub concept will be repeated on Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas when it is completed and delivered in April of 2015.
